Epson Stylus NX420 Troubleshooting

The quality of the copy or print is not up to your standards.

Make sure that the printer is stable and on a flat surface and that the paper is being copied is flat against the glass of the scanner.

If there are spots or streaks on the copied pages, clean the glass of the scanner with a lint-free cloth and if necessary, a very small amount of glass cleaner can be used to spray on the cloth first (not directly onto the glass).

Make sure that the side of the paper that is meant to be printed on is facing up when put into the sheet feeder (e.g. the whiter/brighter or the glossy side of the paper).

For the best printing and copying outcome, Epson recommends using their Epson special paper and Epson ink cartridges.

If there are stripes of ink across the page or if the ink is too faint, the print head might need to be cleaned. You can run a "nozzle check" as described in Epson's support manual for the Epson Stylus NX420 on page 36.

Paper doesn't feed into printer or it gets jammed in the printer.

Remove all the paper from the sheet feeder and flip through the stack to separate the sheets from each other. Reload the paper against the right side, and then slide the left edge guide up against the paper, but not too tightly.

Only up to 120 sheets of letter or A4-size plain paper, 80 sheets of matte paper, or 20 sheets of photo paper, can be loaded into the sheet feeder at a time. All other papers should be loaded one sheet at a time.

Do not load paper that is hole punched.

1. Gently remove the jammed paper from the output tray or the sheet feeder
2. If the paper is stuck inside the printer, turn off the printer.
3. Open the scanner, remove the jammed paper, close the scanner, turn the printer back on, and load another sheet of paper into the sheet feeder.

Be sure to line up the paper being copied in the front, right corner of the scanner glass.

Do not load paper above the arrow mark inside the edge guide of the paper feeding tray.

At least one of the ink cartridges are empty and need to be replaced.

If the ink cartridges are replaced and the error code remains, make sure that the cartridges are correctly installed by pressing the start button, pressing down on the cartridges so that they click into place, and press the start button again.

If this error appears, it means that the internal parts of the printer have reached the end of their service lifetime. You can try contacting Epson for help, but because the Epson Stylus NX420 is discontinued, there might not be much they can do.
