Laptop is unable to connect to WiFi router

No matter what you try, you cannot connect to the WiFi router.

WiFi is not turned on

Check to see if the wireless status light is turned on. If the light is turned on, the wireless is on and if not, the wireless is turned off. If the wireless light is off, click both Fn and F2 to enable the wireless.

Wireless router is either off or not plugged in

Go to your wireless router and see if it is on. If the wireless router is not on, check to see if the router is plugged into an outlet. Once it is plugged in, push the power button /switch to turn on the router. Check the indicator lights on the modem to see if it is functioning properly. Once it is working properly, attempt to connect to the wireless router.

Password to WiFi is incorrect

Go to your wireless settings and check the properties. Scroll down to security and check if your passwords and security settings are correct. Once they are correct, reconnect to the WiFi.

Drivers are out of date

First, check and see if your drivers are out of date. In order to do so, click the Start button and select the Control Panel button. Then click System and Security and afterwards click on Device Managers. Scroll down to Network Adapters and expand it. Once you do that, right click on the Wireless Network Adapter and select properties. After that click the Driver tab and check the driver version. If the driver version is out of date, click Update Driver to update the driver. Then retry connecting to the wireless router.

Unable to wake up from sleep mode

You get a blank screen when coming back from sleep mode

Hard Reset

If you have no saved work, the simplest way to get your computer back on is to do a hard reset.

1. Hold the power button until it completely shuts down, then let go

2. Press the power button to turn on the computer

A black screen with white letters might show up after starting up the computer, asking if you would like to start the computer in Safe Mode. If you had no other troubleshooting other than not being able to come back from sleep mode, it is safe to Start Windows Normally

Change Power Setting to Sign In when you return from sleep mode

This is a workaround way to prepare your laptop to come back from sleep mode.

Press Start then type in Power Settings in the search bar then press Enter on your keyboard. Once the Power Options window is opened, look on the left side and click on Require a password on wakeup click on Change Settings that are currently unavailable and choose the option Require a password (recommended) then Save changes on bottom right.

After this is done, when the laptop is in sleep mode, HOLD a printable key (such as the space bar) and then press the power button to resume.

Change Refresh Rate

Some users experience this problem at 120 Hz monitor refresh rate. Although a lower refresh rate is not optimal, changing the refresh rate to 60 Hz may solve the issue. Right-click an empty area on the desktop and select Screen Resolution then click the words Advanced settings.

Click the Monitor tab, then under Monitor Settings select a Screen refresh rate: to 60 Hertz. Click Apply then Save.

Driver Update

Inability to wake up from sleep mode is common in the Dell XPS 17 L702X model and other Dell models with NVIDIA cards for 3D display when the user has the refresh rate set to 120 Hz. While changing the refresh rate might solve this problem, updating the driver to the latest version that fully supports 120 Hz refresh rate on 3D monitors may be a better solution. Visit http://www.nvidia.com/download/index.asp...and under Option 1 select the following for each criterion:

Product Type: GeForce

Product Series: GeForce 500M Series (Notebook)

Product : GeForce GT 555M or 550M

Operating System: Your current operating system (Windows 7 64-bit is the factory installed Operating System)

Language: English (US)

Press the green SEARCH button, then find the DOWNLOAD button on the page, then AGREE & DOWNLOAD if you agree to NVIDIA’s License agreement.

Wait until the download is complete, then run the driver update.

Black screen after entering system password

"When logging into your device, a black screen appears instead of the computer display"

Unwanted programs in the laptop

In order to end the "Run once wrapper" press the control, alt, delete buttons and scroll down to click on Task Manager. Once you locate the Run Once Wrapper in the process tab, right click and scroll down to end task. When the desktop appears, click on the Start button and in the search bar type "Uninstall a program". Select and uninstall "WSE_Binkiland", after the program is uninstalled click the start button again and restart the computer.

Blue screen of death appears

“While doing some work, the blue screen of death appears”

Major hard disk errors

If you experience the blue screen of death, BSOD, you should check for hard disk errors. In order to check, you first go and click the Start button and then click Computer. After you do that, right click the drive to be checked and click on Properties. Then select the tools tab and click the Check now button that is under Error-checking. If there is an error detected, select Automatically fix file system errors.

Memory problems

Begin by opening Memory Diagnostics by selecting the Start button and clicking Control Panel. Go to the search bar and type “Memory”. After you type “Memory”, select Diagnose your computer’s memory problems. If a window pops up asking for an administrator password or confirmation, enter the password or provide confirmation. If you choose to run the tool immediately, close all running programs and save all of your work. When you restart your Windows, the Memory Diagnostics Tool will automatically run.

Windows unable to recover

If you are unable to recover from the BSOD in any other way, you may need to reinstall Windows 7. You can do this by using your Windows 7 installation disc or setup files. However if you do choose this last resort option, reinstalling Windows 7 will delete any of the programs you have installed and will be restored to the default settings. Your personal files and programs will need to be reinstalled afterward by either files or installation discs.

No audio from the speakers is heard

No sound whatsoever is coming out of the speakers

Drivers are out of date

If no sound is coming from the speakers when the volume is at a reasonable level then it could be that the audio drivers are out of date. As mentioned before with the wireless issue, the driver needs to be updated. In order to do so, click on the speaker icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. Then, click on the speaker icon that's above the volume bar. The Speakers Properties box will appear, click on Properties. Once the Realtek High Definition Audio Properties box appears, on the General page that is displayed, click on the Change settings. Another Realtek High Definition Audio Properties box will appear. Click on the Driver tab where you will have several options to select. Click the Update Driver and select the first option "search automatically..." when it appears. After you update the driver and still no audio is heard then, the speakers need to be replaced. You can find out how to do that here using Speaker Guide.
