Thanks David, Right after I posted that, I decided to try peeling off the clear adhesive that was still on the old digitizer and apply it to the plastic tabs. Then I aligned them above each key (home, search, back and menu) and slid them into place, pressing them down with a thin piece of cardboard inserted between the lcd and plastic tabs. It worked out :o)
That should do it. There's no apple logo on the hard drives, they are mfg by toshiba, hitachi, samsung, Not Apple. The hdd connector is probably what someone said wouldn't work. There are aftermarket connectors that some people had problems with.
Try hooking it up to an external monitor to see if you get video out that way. Otherwise, it could be that you need a new backlight or new lcd. Worst case, your graphics chip on the motherboard may be fried, in which case you need a new motherboard or new laptop.
You can download the manual here. When you get to the page, enter the captcha shown and the download link will appear above where you entered the captcha. Watch out for big "Download" buttons, as google ads trick a lot of people into downloading something totally irrelevant to what was intended. The belt diagram is on page 23. You may need to zoom in quite a bit, it's all in black and white... kind of hard to make out, but it pretty much shows the direction around each pulley.
Depending on how stripped the screw head is, you could try fitting a small piece of paper over the tip of your screwdriver to fill the gaps between it and the screw head. Another trick is a rubber band, but that works for bigger screw heads. Hope you get it out!
Niece's iPhone is fixed, she had a cracked screen. This wasn't my first iPhone repair, but it was my first 5s repair. The guide was a breeze, thanks Walter Galan!

The guide is ok, but maybe you should just rename it to "Home Button Troubleshooting"
as it is misleading to have "Replacement" in the title. People are expecting you to explain how to take the home button out and place the new one in.
