Reading all of the comments first was very helpful. They convinced me to NOT completely remove the front screen, and to instead support it vertically with a can of soup and rubber band while taking the battery out. This way, you only have 3 things to remove: the battery connector bracket, the battery connector, and the battery itself.
One note about removing the battery: heating the back side of the phone (very lightly, a little at a time) with a hair dryer seemed to help to loosen the glue. I put a spudger on the OPPOSITE side of the battery from the plastic tab and pulled up gently, and it came off. Pulling on the plastic tab did seem to help at all to get the battery off.
Regarding "Volume stuck on high", where is the mentioned guide?
Very frustrating that this speaker doesn't work properly after only 4 years.
