I'm a younger repair enthusiast who cares about fixing devices before replacing them. I care less about the political sides and more about how it just feels wrong to have to but new devices when one small part breaks. My two tenets of repairability are these:
- You should be able to buy new replacement parts near or at the cost of manufacturing, accounting for related costs needed to bring the part to life and to my doorstep such as R&D of the part (Looking at Apple's replacement part catalog with disgust). I believe if these are sourced externally these should be publicly linked to and that all these parts should be sold as long as the device is supported or the sourced parts are manufactured.
- No software lock restricting part pairing of OEM and non-OEM parts. This is honestly the biggest crux of modern devices. I should be able to change my parts on my own device without the manufacturer saying no. They no longer own the product.
Everything else is just a nice blessing to me, and I'll be grateful for companies like Fairphone and Framework for creating repairable products. Neither are perfect, with framework using captive screws that easily strip and non-replaceable usb ports and Fairphone not selling all their parts such as the chasis of the Fairphone 5 or its main board.
