I had similar problems with my Kindle. Tried all the solutions above and then some. Soft reset, factory reset, remove the battery, use a different cable, charger. Nothing worked. Any successes were short lived. This may be idiosyncratic, but my problem appears to have been that the on-off slider switch was out of place and not making sufficient contact to complete the circuit. When you have the back off the device, look at the slider switch. Within the Kindle, above the switch there’s a small white rectangle with a black piece of soft plastic in the center. When one uses the switch it passes over the rectangle. Initially I thought the black plastic was dirt or debris, so I tried to brush it off. Then I noticed the orange charging light was on. (Kindle was hooked up to my laptop). I pushed down on the white rectangle. The device fully charged, though I don’t think the battery was depleted. Since then my Kindle has worked flawlessly.
