If I understood right you Mac accepts max 2GB of RAM. So actually it doesn't really matter if you put 1 + 1 or 2 in total. I would suggest you to look at the prices. If you can get 2 x 1 GB RAM cheaper than 1 x 2GB RAM I would say go for it.

Ok I finally found a way to install more than 2GB RAM to my iMac the solution is the modify the firmware of the logicboard and make him believe that it is iMac 5,1 (late 2006 core 2 duo) instead of iMac 4,1 (early 2006 core duo) the is a download available here: iMac firmware upgrade but to do this one before should upgrade the CPU of the iMac with a core 2 duo CPU (the ones from iMac 5,1). I tested it and works, this way my iMac has a maximum 3,3GB RAM :)

Hey infoghost: I can help you as I upgraded it very recently. The best PCu you can find is T7600 (merom) which I bought on ebay for 80 euro, makes your iMac Core 2 Duo 2,33 Ghz (as the late 2006 iMacs) it is tricky to instal Lion cause Apple doesn't want or probably didn't think about it at all the consumer CPU upgrade. So when you double click on lion install on your new upgraded mac, the installer doesn't recognize the hardware you have. But when you install from another mac as a target drive it scans hardware on the mac you are using to install (and skips the iMac). After the install, while you where using the other mac, you should go and delete on iMacs hard drive: /Volumes/<name of target drive>/System/Library/CoreServices/PlatformSupport.plist if not your iMac doesn't start at all, because it is not in the supported platformlist of the lion operation system. it is very simple, and you can ask me if anything is not clear. yea the battery is exactly that. I read some guides before. I was asking because there some people on ebay selling the same battery for 20 dollars only because they precised that they selling a PRAM battery replacement. I think if the voltage (3V) and the dimensions (CR2032) are the same, its stupid asking 20 dollars only because you guarantee its a PRAM battery. Thank you for your reply and wishing me luck!! I know I will have great fun. My iMac is like my best friend in these years so I will be super careful + I am an assistant surgeon, so for me it will be like operating patient :D

edit: Ok I made the upgrade too. I changed 2.0Ghz Core Duo with 2.33Ghz Core 2 Duo. First 3 days impressions are great! It's definetly worth it especially how cheap are the CPUs on ebay now. Xbench results for CPU test changed from 94.09 to 165.17. So its a +75% performance. And Lion works great, but you have to install it with Target Drive utility using another lion enabled computer. when I was removing the one long coarse-thread (yellow one), its support beneath it broke. I was very careful actually but I think these things unavoidable if you are threading an old computer (I am using it after 1 week its release)

so I put some glue (very very little quantity) in its remaining hole, just to keep the screw in that hole

on this step I just forgot (there always something to forget!!) to connect back display data cable connector to the logic board, after I replaced the hard drive. Don't worry nothing happens. Hwen I switched on the iMac and it was just functioning alright and normal but I wasn't able see anything other than a black screen :)

If you got a black screen but a normal white light on the right bottom corner, think abot the connector !
