Originally from England, now living in Texas, I've been fixing things for as long as I can remember, staring with mechanical clocks when I was very young.
Received my BSc. & MSc in Mathematics and Computer Science and began a career in Information Technology, specialising in server infrastructure architecture, design, documentation and deployment.
A self-confessed rabid Apple fanboy, I collect Macs, both old and new, and other Apple devices. I then upgrade them to the latest technology (within the limitations of the factory motherboard).
After 20 years of IT, including a stint working for Apple in the UK, I completely changed gears and started a high performance automotive business 11 years ago based on late model Corvettes, Camaros and AMG Mercedes.
Well, that's me. A bit of a hardcore geek and crazy gearhead. :o)

Heeft geantwoord op: Brand of drives Apple uses in their ADM'sIan, My 2006 Xserve running Lion Server is configured with a internal 1TB boot drive and an internal 2TB drive. The 3rd bay is empty. I do not have either software or hardware RAID set up on this server. As I mentioned, I have a 2TB USB drive running TimeMachine backups and a Drobo Gen 2 4 bay via Firewire 800. I have 3 Xserves and they are all set up like this (all 2006 models) but without the Drobo. Hope this helps.

Heeft geantwoord op: Brand of drives Apple uses in their ADM'sYes, the Hitachi 3.5" 2TB 7200RPM SATA Enterprise (Hitachi HUA722020ALA330) works perfectly in my 2006 Intel XServes. Available from Amazon and eBay (new and used). No jumpers to set, no software to download. Just install in drive caddy and plug in. XServe (running Lion Server) immediately recognizes it and Lion Disk Utility can see and format/partition it.

I wanted to address a few questions in one comment, rather than replying to each individually.
1> I have abandoned using Mojave 10.14 on this 2010 27” iMac. The slow GPU makes it unusable. I’m back to High Sierra 10.13 with APFS, 1TB internal SSD and 32Gb RAM. This appears to be my optimal configuration for this 2010 27” iMac
2> GPU upgrades. I looked into this and while I believe that there are some upgrades that will work (2011 27” iMac, other PC MXM GPU cards), the cost and complexity was not worth it for me. Between flashing the card, reflowing and heat sink packaging, I’m not going to attempt an upgrade.
3> 21” iMac. Unfortunately I have zero experience with these machines and their internals. I have several 27” iMacs of different vintages (2009, 2010, 2012 Slim, 2016 Retina 5k) but no 21” iMacs.
4> This is still a GREAT machine! Yes, it’s 9 years old now (about 55 years old in dog years) and it is approaching “Vintage” status, yet it still hangs with modern machines in terms of functionality and usability.
I have no idea. I successfully used the i7 870 and it has been running like a champ for over 5 years, now on High Sierra 10.13.3 - it has been flawless.

Komputerbay 16GB (2x 8GB) PC3-10600 10666 1333MHz SODIMM 204-Pin Laptop Memory 9-9-9-24 for PC only - not MAC
You 2 kits - 4 x 8Gb modules = 32Gb
It says “Not MAC” but 4 of these modules have been running like a champ for the past 6 years in my 2010 iMac with the i7 upgrade :)
Thanks! It’s been 5 years since I did the upgrade and I still use this iMac in anger every day!
Without a part number, I cannot be sure. It *looks* like the correct one, but I cannot positively say it will work. The correct part number is at the top of this repair.
It might be a failed fan controller, so it is not showing the correct fan speed? Just speculation on my part. You may have to open it back up to investigate.
That processor will not work in your 2009. The 2009 is a Core 2 Duo.
I replaced the HDD with a SSD. I perform a SMC Reset and a "Option-Command-P-R" Reset after every hardware upgrade I do on any Mac. That usually solves many issues. Hope this helps.
Thanks Claudia. Regarding Macbook Pro mods, the MBP has very little leeway in their thermal envelope because of their packaging. The iMac, (old) Mac Mini and (old) Mac Pro are much more forgiving of radical processor, graphics or other internal upgrades as there is much more space to dissipate heat. I have upgraded all of my older Macbook Pros with SSDs with no ill effects (while keeping the SuperDrive), so I'm not sure what you are experiencing.
Yes, but it is quite expensive. Expect to spend around $600 USD for a Radeon 6970 out of a 2011 27" iMac. Here is a step-by-step install - iMac Intel 27" (Late 2009 or Mid 2010) Graphics Card Replacement
