I had the same question, but I just grabbed a 2012 quad core from apple's refurb site and it runs much more quietly than the previous 2011 i5 dual core with radeon that I had.

The 2012 fan replacement is $60, not sure how much the improvement would be.

HDMI 1.4 can power the device without USB power.

This device is network attached, why on earth would you need or want an SSD for backups? Magnetic drives are not the bottleneck in reading/writing data to the time capsule.

I'm guessing Apple would be !@#$%^ if someone sold a $20 kit with the missing parts+cables needed to DIY.
