Just replaced the drive in a 3.1GHz i5 27” Mid 2011 with a bad 1TB Seagate drive. Thought Apple had a replacement program, but they told my customer NO. (they say a lot of things lately). Ok so when I took it apart there was no thermal sensor on the HD, nor a cable. SO I put in a Black WD 2TB. When reassembled, high fan noise on the middle HD fan. So I put on a fan regulation program, dialed down the HD speed and all is fine. Q - with no cable and no sensor… why did this happen?
On the iMac I had, it was a 5A fuse that blew out on the Power Supply Board. It is a radial, 2 lead and rectangular black. Located near the AC line input wires. Apple recommended a new power supply :)
Changing out the hard drive- taking the 500 “Apple” drive out and replacing it with a 1 TB Firecuda hybrid. Do I need to use the fan control software or the OWC adapter connector/board? The Apple drive has the 7 pin interface, my new one does not. Assume it is for the temp sensor?
OK, so probably need the connector fix or fan software? Appreciate an answer. Thanks!
Installed a new ifixit battery. while it is slightly smaller than the original the “taped side” made it difficult to place so that the logic board could be put back. Just takes a bit of work.
I also think “just do the reverse” when this is so compact, perhaps some instructions or a list would help.
Thanks for the person who put this together! It is a good guide to take apart the iPad Air 2
Is the WD hard drive an Apple Special with some internal rom or other thing? Planning to put in a Seagate Firecuda 2TB. Is there some special plug or temperature sensor requirement? Seems like there is only the SATA connector. Will I encounter fast fans? (can load the software to stop that). Think it’s a swap and is “easy”.
Service note: As you can replace the hard drive without disconnecting the 4 cables. Be VERY CAREFUL to put a display screw back in one place to avoid having the display to accidentally fall forward and “rip” the cables out of their connectors. This is a quick way to replace the hard drive. Also note that while other drives usually have a temperature sensor connector/cable, the original Apple 1TB does not. It only had the 2 SATA power and data cables.

Does the drive require any special cables or other device that works with the cooling fans?
