I think this happened to my passport before, you might need to charge it overnight i.e. for 12 hours then try switching on. I think maybe when battery is very drained to save power the LED does not come on when charging, until it has enough juice to use the lights.

It might have got damp in your car. If the car got cold at night it could have caused condensation which might damage the phone. This is just a guess.
