YLOD repair kit worked perfect! Easy and quick.

Mijn probleem

Months back I had woke up to a PS3 that had been left running, in game, over night. It was locked up. The little people in my house had neglected to turn it off the night before. I called Sony and it was going to be a minimum of 175$ to repair including the shipping costs. I had to look for a cheaper alternative to buying new, and 175$ was far from a justifiable expense for a 5 year old console.

The price tag of the full repair kit (with tools) was too good to pass up. I am a professional tech, so the value of the tools alone, is worth the risk.

Mijn oplossing

The repair went really smooth. Dis-assembly went smooth, cleaning was easy, once everything was apart, and re-assembly was close to flawless. There were a few screws that did not get put back and I think that could have been remedied with a more in depth look at where you should remove screws from, during the tutorial.

The tutorial was extremely helpful. The order of dis-assembly was key, and unknown to me prior to this project. Like I mentioned before, you might consider spending a bit more time showing where each screw comes from to help with re-assembly. I had no reference to go back to once a couple of my screws got mixed into the wrong screw bin.

There were also an array of thermal pads in my kit, but no explanation as to what size goes on what microprocessors. I ended up with 5 extra pads in the end after covering all MPCU's with pads. This was confusing as well. Why send the extra, and if they are for mistakes, then mention that in the video or enclosed documentation.

Mijn advies

Best advice I can say is, watch the video in its entirety before you begin taking your ps3 apart. Then after you have watched it, start it over and go through each section with the guide, pausing to complete each section in tandem with the tutorial guide.

Also make certain to keep your screws separate and labeled well, as to which component they came out of.

All in all this is a very straight forward fix, and there is nothing to be intimidated by. Just follow the video and your PS3 should be running in no time.
