Our PS3 overheated and we got the dreaded yellow light of death. I had sent it back for warranty repair once, and didn't expect that to work again, so after sitting in a closet for 9 months, I ordered the fix...

My 17 year-old son got it mostly stripped down to certain points, then I came in and helped with ribbon connectors, unplugging the PS3 plastic box (which sits next to the bluray drive) and the cleaning of the CPU and GPU.

Mijn advies

Plastic box next to the bluray drive is held in partially to a socket in the box and a plug sticking out of the lower assembly. Once the screws are removed, pressure is needed to remove that box. It's also very helpful to have a 17 year-old boy with second hand watch time the 25 seconds of heat gun exposure. "Dry fitting" the components back into the box before applying the arctic silver compound is highly recommended, as well as applying the rubber heat sinks before the paste. Finally, more detailed instruction on how to work with the ribbon cables would be helpful.
