MacBook Pro A1708 SSD Removal & Replacement Guide
This guide explains how to remove and replace the SSD in the MacBook Pro 13-inch A1708 (2016–2017). The A1708 is the non-Touch Bar model with function keys and has a removable SSD.
Before starting, shut down your MacBook, unplug all cables, and work on a clean, static-free surface. Keep track of screws because they vary in size. A magnetic mat is recommended.

- Torx T5 screwdriver – SSD screw
- Plastic opening tools – safely lift the bottom cover
- Tweezers – small screws/connectors
⚠️ Check SSD Compatibility
The A1708 uses a proprietary Apple PCIe 3.0 SSD. Common capacities are 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.
There are two 256GB SSD variants, and some may not work with the Mid-2017 A1708. Check the SSD's model/serial information before purchasing.

🔄 NVMe Upgrade Option
Instead of buying an Apple OEM SSD, you can use an NVMe SSD with an A1708-compatible adapter. This can be a cheaper way to increase storage.

This guide applies specifically to the A1708 MacBook Pro with function keys. Later MacBook Pro models use soldered storage and cannot have their SSD replaced in the same way.

Access the internals by removing the lower case.

Turn laptop over

Remove all screws on bottom cover with Pentalobe screwdriver

Press suction cup to lower case and pull up to create gap

Insert plastic tool into gap, release hidden clips

Lift front edge and slide cover towards you

Prevent electrical damage by disconnecting connectors.

Peel back the plastic protective cover over the battery connection area.

Gently lift the small black locking tab on the battery board data cable connector using a plastic spudger.

Slide the ribbon cable straight out of its socket on the logic board to sever data communication.

Remove the Battery Power Jumper Screw

Use a T5 Torx screwdriver to remove the single T5 screw (pancake screw) securing the battery power connector/jumper to the logic board.

Gently lift the metal battery connector tab upward using a plastic spudger just enough to clear the terminal contact and prevent it from springing back into place.

The removable SSD can now be accessed.

Locate SSD module

Unscrew retaining screw with Torx T5

Gently slide SSD out of connector

Insert the new compatible SSD into the slot.

Align new SSD with connector

Slide firmly into place

Secure with Torx T5 screw

Close the device and restore functionality.

Reconnect battery cable

Replace bottom cover, align clips

Press firmly and reinsert screws
