Het kan lastig zijn om precies te weten te komen welk model van de MacBook Pro je in je bezit hebt. Dezelfde modelnummers kunnen bijvoorbeeld een verscheidenheid aan processor-configuraties bevatten. == Geschiedenis van het model ==

De MacBook Pro-laptop werd voor het eerst in januari 2006 uitgebracht; hierbij verving het de PowerBook G4, Apple's eerdere laptop-reeks. Het originele MacBook Pro-model werd in een aluminium behuizing op de markt gebracht en wordt daardoor tot op de dag van vandaag gekenmerkt.

Na meer dan twee jaar en verscheidene kleinere upgrades kondigde Apple een volledig nieuw MacBook Pro-model aan in oktober van het jaar 2008, genaamd de MacBook Pro 15" Unibody. De MacBook 15" Unibody is een op zichzelf staande update van de originele MacBook Pro en bestaat uit een combinatie van alle vorige features van de Pro en een stijlvollere en lichtere aluminium behuizing.

Eind 2012 introduceerde Apple de dunnere en lichtere MacBook Pro met Retina-scherm, wat zorgde voor een laptop met haarscherpe beeldschermen maar wat tevens een afname in repareerbaarheid betekende. De levensduur van Retina-modellen is kunstmatig gelimiteerd door trucjes als het vastlijmen van de batterij en het vastsolderen van de RAM. In latere modellen werd deze trend zelfs uitgebreid doordat ook de opslag werd vastgesoldeerd. Dit maakte de "Pro-"modellen tot een model dat na aankoop amper repareerbaar en niet upgradebaar was.

In 2016 werd de meest radicale verandering doorgevoerd in de nieuwe generatie MacBook's, waarbij alle I/O-poorten vervangen werden door een kleiner aantal USB-C (Thunderbolt) poorten. De populaire en praktische MagSafe-oplaadpoort werd hierbij ook geëlimineerd. De Function-toetsen werden vervangen door de Touch Bar, een voor aanraking gevoelige OLED-strip die bepaalde context-afhankelijke toetsen weergeeft. Apple ontworp ook het volledige toetsenbord, waarbij de conventionele "scissor-switches" vervangen werden door de beruchte "butterfly"-switches die minder afstand aflegden bij het indrukken, waardoor een dunnere laptop en stabielere toetsaanslagen mogelijk waren. De toetsen bewezen echter zeer kwetsbaar en onbetrouwbaar te zijn, zelfs na meerdere hardware-revisies, en de reacties op het verschil in beleving waren overwegend negatief, zelfs als de toetsen prima functioneerden. Dit alles werd nog versterkt door een niet al te beste repareerbaarheid; het repareren van het toetsenbord vereiste het vervangen van de gehele bovenste behuizing inclusief de batterij en de speakers. Apple besloot uiteindelijk een met vier jaar verlengde garantieperiode in het leven te roepen voor het beruchte toetsenbord.
