Function and Design.
The SF-3000 is a pocket-sized electronic diary and organizer that was released around 1986, and is part of a popular line of similar products by Casio.
Essentially a predecessor to the PDA, This device would be used to log and organize information, usually business-oriented, to make plans, keep track of events, and perform basic math calculations. Users would also be able to store more sensitive data into a designated 'secret' area with a built-in password registration system.
The device consist of 2 metal casings fastened to 2 red plastic frames that hold the electronics. Both casings and frames are separated 1-to-1 by a hinge that folds and snaps shut, and when opened, reveals the actual device.
The bottom frame holds the math operation buttons, which sit above the custom-layout QWERTY keypad, as well as buttons for setting the date and time, and data entry. The main power switch is also visible off to the left. The top frame holds the numeric keypad to the right, with other buttons for navigation and power, and the left holds the LCD display and an array of 7 buttons for the other functions mentioned earlier.
On the outside, the 2 metal casings can be in either 2 colors, with a suffix added to the model number for the color of the case. BK = black case (as shown above), GD = gold case. The top casing is embossed with low-raised lines for grip, and has the branding and product name printed on the top-left and top-right, respectively. The bottom casing is flat, and is fastened to their respective plastic frame by 2 screws. Around the bottom left corner, if facing the casing directly, the power and manufacturer information is printed, as well as the reset button, which naturally clears all the device's stored data.
