I'm having the same problem with a slim and it is not the YLOD. I have reflowed it twice and have yet to find a solution on this site or youtube. Please keep any new information on this problem with the slims available by posting, Thanks

This sounds like the early stages of a YLOD. I would advise you to open up your ps3 and clean it from any dust. Also see if the thermal paste has dried out. If so, replace it.

I have worked on PS3's for years the Yellow light is the GPU. You need to reball the GPU to really fix it right. You can reflow the GPU, but it want last.

I've had to fix YLOD on my old ps3 a couple of times with my dad. Look up how to Reflow your motherboard. It's usually a temp fix, but it can get it working for a couple of months before you need to do it again.

It is probably an older model PS3, the big one. A lot of them have the same symptom of YLOD. Today it is known that probably capacitors are the problem. The rectangular black things on the bottom of CPU and GPU. You can try to replace them with other more reliable and see if it works! I see question is old and if you want information about what type of capacitors and how to do it feel free to ask for more information.

its confirmed to be the gpu die separating from the substrate in most cases, replacing the tonkin capacitors may temp fix it, but only as a coincidental thing.

to find out exactly, there's a serial communications method called syscon. it involves soldering wires to test points on the motherboard and hooking it to a usb uart dongle to read the error messages directly from the boards log files via commands sent to the uart device.

Someone has figured out how to read the SYSCON error log on YLOD ps3. It consists of 3 wires and a small & cheap board. Solder three wires to the motherboard, connect a usb to the small board & with a free script the error log will populate & tell you what the actual problem is. Wether it’s the NEC caps, gpu, RSX etc. I’m being very general here but it’s easy to find the specifics & do this yourself & fix what’s actually broken on your ps3. Many of the guys doing this say the NEC caps are NOT the majority problem. https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Syscon_Err...
