Repair guides, support, and troubleshooting information for the first 13-inch MacBook Air to feature Apple's ARM-based M1 SoC (with an 8-core CPU and up to an 8-core GPU). Released in November 2020 and identified by model numbers A2337 or EMC 3598.

MacBook doesn't sleep when lid closed after screen replaced

I had two a2337 Macbook Airs. One had a broken screen but a functional keyboard. The other was functional but the keyboard was broken - this was also my daily use laptop setup up as I need it and with all my files.

I decided to move the working screen and logic board from the system with the bad keyboard into the chassis with working keyboard.

The swap seemed to go fine, its booted up and, battery is charges, keyboard, trackpad, speakers, ..., all works. However when I go to shut the lid, I can see that the laptop does not go to sleep.

I despite my research I've not actually found out where the lid angle sensor actually is on the a2337 or how I can go about testing whether it works or is broken.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Update (02/16/26)

I should add.. the audio board with the headphone and power button/finger print scanner jack was also transferred across with the logic board.

Unlike the newer MacBook Airs (M2, M3, etc.), the M1 does not use a lid angle sensor, but instead, the traditional magnetic one. If the machine isn't going to sleep when the lid is closed, it could point to the cable being damaged or disconnected. You can do the 'Magnet Test' by taking a weak magnet and placing it over the sensor to see if that's your culprit. There are two sensors on this model. The response here will help you locate them: Where is the hall sensor of MacBook Air M1?

Ah that makes sense the microphone array connector was damaged on the donor machine and I've not yet transferred the one from the old machine as it involves removing the taped down batteries. I don't know why the other one isn't working but the least I can do is reinstate the old one.

It's odd I did attempt to find to whether the lid sensor was a part of the microphone array and couldn't find anything online to suggest it was. But now I know!

Thank you, fitted the microphone array and we're all back up and running!

@dobson156 - To clarify, the M1 and newer MacBook Airs use a simple Hall sensor which is hidden within the Right Speaker unit. When the lid is folded down a magnet within it mates up with the sensor.

The newer MacBook Pro's use an angle sensor setup.
