How to update this machine to current specs?

I bought a 17-inch MacBook Pro new in 2009. But Apple ceased support for it last year even though this computer continued to work WNLs at the time. Where to find guidance as to how I could upgrade the machine so as to bring it up to present specs? David

Sorry, laptops aren’t always upgradable.

While RAM and Storage are often upgradable! In this series the type of RAM and limit of two slots limits you to a max of 8GB. The SATA interface requires a SATA II (3.0Gbps) drive, some SATA III (6.0Gbps) drives may not work reliably.

Beyond that the logic board is limited to what Apple produced for this series MacBookPro5,3. There is no Intel I Series or Apple M Series logic boards that will fit.

I guess that my "dead-ended" MacBook Pro is only useful as a printer driver then, huh

@davidsplace - I still have a 2012 15” which i’ve maxed out and using Big Sur to manage my home security system. So don’t be to quick to toss it. A friend of mine uses her old Mac running Linux.
