My screen goes completely white

The screen on my PowerBook has been going completely white. At first if I shut down and turned it back on it would fix it for a while. I decided to unplug everything except the power cord and reinstalled OS 10.4.6. After that I reinstalled the 10.4.11 combo update. That seemed to help for a while. Now however, it has gone white and will not even work even if I unplug everything and try to start up on the installation disk. It seems to be functioning just not displaying anything. Any ideas?

If the screen is white then the problem is not an inverter issue since the screen is lightened. I would suspect a LVDS (video) cable issue or a graphic chip failure. Are your hinges damaged or really stiff ? The LVDS cable runs thru the hinges and could be cut inside them. As mayer suggess connect to an external monitor and tell us if the video is normal on the external.

I just noticed that if I move the screen back and forth it goes back and forth from normal to all white screen. So yes it seems that there is a problem with the hinges/video cable. The hinges have always been pretty tight.

You must be warned that opening the Titanium display is not a piece of cake. The bezel around the display is glued and very fragile. You should check ebay for a dead machine with good screen/cables and good hinges then transfer it to your machine otherwise find a LVDS cable and replace your faulty one.

I did go ahead and hook up my s-video cable to my TV and it displayed without any problems even though the screen on my laptop was going back and forth between normal and all white.

In replacing the LVDS cable, does the display have to be opened up?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, the cable goes from the logic board to the rear of the LCD panel. Just check this link:

Hook up to an external monitor to verify the graphics chip. If the external works then we can look at the inverter and cables.
