? Folder at boot (BLUE icons for external drives)

2012 i7 MBP A1278 13" Uni-body. Question Mark Folder at boot.

Connect external to reinstall OS & the icons are BLUE when they are always YELLOW.

Screen has been tested on another identical unit and displays YELLOW icons.

Select OS to install (Catalina) Gets halfway in initial progress bar & the ? Folder comes again.

I have swapped over 3x Flex cables. Same results.

3x SSD (ADATA / Transcend / Samsung). ALL with Catalina Pre-Installed. Same Result.

Reset SMC / PRAM etc..... Same Result.

Firmware password protection is OFF.

Apple Diagnostics ONLY says the battery needs service (somewhat Irrelevant to issue) BUT the unit automatically boots up when connected to charger.

Obviously the board is suddenly not finding the SSD boot drive - Was OK the last time tested a few days back.

What lines do I need to check on the board 820-3115 EMC 2554.

Baffled.

The issue of a blinking Q in a folder is telling you the drive you are using either doesn’t have the needed system files or the drive you had in the system was removed and the new one is not known to the hardware.

If you boot up and press the Option key you should be greeted with a menu of drives which are blessed with the OS installed. Using the arrow keys select it and let the system startup. Once started go into your Startup control panel and select this drive. If you don’t see a blessed drive then the drive has failed, not connected or is not running the needed version of macOS.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

You also talk about odd coloring of the icons, implies the CPU (graphics engine part) has failed. Unlike the 15” model the 13” only uses the Intel Iris graphics engine which is part of the CPU logic. Remove the heat sink and inspect the silicon chip for cracks or damage. Often I find the system overheated and the chip failed.

I have tried as mentioned 3x different SSD's (ADATA / Transcend / Samsung). ALL with Catalina Pre-Installed and known to be working fine on other units. I did a fresh thermal paste and the chip looks fine no visible damage. Everything was working fine the last time I powered it up. Next step is to put a new LCD on it as one is on the way anyway together with a new LCD cable, which might help the blue icons display.... (Other colors appear to be fine). And BTW this is clearly NOT a retina model so there are no intel Iris graphics (HD 4000). It will not fresh install as also mentioned above, just cuts out.....

@livfe - The system won’t respond correctly if the systems firmware is still Sierra or older. Using an external bootable drive (Sierra) can you boot up under it?

@danj I have selected the ONLY OS that has its ' Unusual Picture' in the list of OS on the installers (Catalina), It is asking me for some recovery password..... let me just wipe this drive on another unit and see what happens (Wiped OK)..... this is a weird one... unless this unit turns out indeed to be another 2011 boner that cannot run Catalina.... Anyway a 2012 Should be able to run older systems for sure.... Updated pictures, Internal SSD not found...... Changed over to a 1TB WD HDD OS Journaled.... still not found in disc utility.

Finally managed to install Catalina on the Transcend SSD (Had to reset date and time & changed another SSD cable. But the colors are not right so next issue will be for the new LCD and LVDS cable to see if that fixed the remaining problem. These units have minds of their own sometimes....
