A1181 MacBook no backlight after the boot chime.

I have the strangest problem with an a1181 MacBook, the Mac boots with a working backlight for about 2 seconds, then the backlight goes off.

I thought this could be the screen inverter or inverter cable, however after testing with known good parts the problem persists. I’m not sure but to me it seems maybe the MacBook thinks the lid is always closed even when it’s open?

Edit, I found something else weird, the Mac boots perfect with a working backlight if the top case isn’t screwed in. I tried a different top case thinking if that was the problem, but it’s definitely not. Maybe it’s a sensor somewhere?

With the top case lifted up, tapping the right side of the Mac turns off the backlight again.

Your system has a Hall sensor which senses the magnetic flux from the magnet held in the display lid along its front edge.

Its been awhile since I've worked on these so my memory is a bit foggy. I do believe the sensor is located with in the uppercase assembly. So using a steel paper clip first locate the the magnet hidden in the lid rubbing the paper clip along the face surface along the edge.

Once you've located the magnet carefully fold down the lid to transfer the location to the uppercase (use some tape to mark the spot). Then follow this guide MacBook Core 2 Duo Upper Case Replacement to remove the upper case to then locate the Hall sensor.

So either the connection within the upper case is loose or the ribbon cable has become damaged (likely). Try reseating it and if that fails replace the cable and then if that fails its time for a new uppercase.
