Your notebook has 8 GB of soldered in place memory and two memory slots. The maximum memory compatible with it is 40 GB this means you can replace the 2 sticks of memory you currently have with a kit of 2X16 GB for a total of 40 GB. You have multiple manufacturers who make compatible memory, so simply do a websearch for "Maximum memory for Lenovo IdeaPad 3-17ABA7" this will give you a list of compatible memory options. Carefully note the exact specifications for the memory you want. then do a search for that specific memory kit looking for the best price. I'm not putting links to a specific supplier since you really ought to decide which memory you want and how much you are willing to pay. Not all memory is created equal so compare the specs, if you see faster memory for example determine that YES it will work with your device, yes you are willing to pay a bit more for it and of course that the added cost will actually make a difference... that will depend on what you use the thing for, most times a small speed improvement is NOT noticeable to the user, but avid gamers will probably want every possible advantage. Have fun and good luck.

Hi @uchetil,

Not to put too fine a point on this but to get 40GB of ram you would need to insert a 32GB ram module into the laptop, as it only has 1ram slot - see p.32 of the hmm.

Also depending on which exact variant of the model the OP has there may only be 4GB of onboard ram and not 8GB - see p.2 of the specifications

So the options may be 36GB (4 + 32) or 40GB (8 + 32) that is IF the BIOS accepts 32GB in 1 slot. I can't find out whether it does or not

Crucial only guarantees a 16GB module for the laptop, so it may then be only 20GB (4 + 16) or 24GB (8 + 16 )

The OP would have to check the specs of the ram module already inserted and then look at the total ram to know what was hard mounted on the board or use the windows memory check command

Cheers

@jayeff I should perhaps have looked more closely, however I did look at several sites that DID NOT agree on the maximum amount OR the number of slots. I optimistically went with the one that said 40 MAX and 2 slots.

@uchetil

You may be correct. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information online.

For example, Crucial agrees with the specs and the hardware manual as far as having only 1 ram slot but states that 40GB is the maximum ram, but then only offers 16GB ram modules and not 32GB modules and also states that there's 8GB of onboard ram - go figure. Given the product specifications it seems it does entirely depend on what exact model variant they have as to how much onboard ram is installed.

I gave all options. At least that way if the OP checks what is installed originally they can then decide which option to try and hope that it works 1st time.

If there is only 1 slot then whether or not it works with a 32GB module time will tell. Perhaps someone knows but they haven't said it online yet. At least not that I've found anyway.

Cheers
