RAM Upgrade:System won’t Boot

Hi:

I’ve been attempting to successfully upgrade my ram from 8 GB to 16 GB, without success. What happens is that I will receive the one bell sound, indicating it’s not recognizing the RAM with the one flash.

I’ve tried the hold the power button down + power button + left shift/option + control for 10 seconds each with the laptop connected to and not connected to a power source. The battery cord does light up, if that’s relevant.

I’ve tried installing one stick of RAM at a time - but it makes no difference.

My old RAM does allow the system to boot up and work as normal, THANK GOD.

I am wondering whether dampness could be a factor bc while the RAM sticks were sealed, the box arrived fairly damp, including the interior box.

Any advice is welcomed. I’ve combed this site and YouTube for other solutions and can’t seem to find anything that is workable. I really want to avoid having to go to Apple bc I believe there’s an issue with the RAM (Note: yes my system is capable of being upgraded to 16 GB, I checked)

Edit: I’ve fought with the forum to include photos of each of the sticks in the OP, to no avail. I have included them down thread. I think the issue is quite clear: Ifixit recommended the wrong RAM. It should’ve been DDR3/PC3 - not DDR3-L/PC3L.

Gekozen oplossing

Hi again folks:

Here is what I’ve learned (thanks to everyone on the forum):

My MacBook Pro (Model A1278) required (as recommended below) DDR3-1600 MHz PC3-12800.

While Ifixit advises that PC3L-12800 is acceptable RAM for my model (and I know some here have advised that DDR3-L/PC3L have worked in their experience), it didn’t in my experience. So lesson learned and thank you again to everyone who made suggestions/gave guidance.

Note: another bonus? I only had to spend $30 for 8GB x 2, so win/win.

Are you sure you have the correct SO-DIMMs. I often encounter people try using the wrong ones.

You could use a fresh pink pencil eraser (still soft) to wipe the contact surfaces to remove any oxidation. Also make sure they are full seated.

I don’t think your issue is simple air moisture, but if gotten wet you could have corrosion damage but that would be liquid damage not vapor.

Thanks for responding.

RE SO-DIMMS: I believe so. I used the same ones as my current 2x 4 sticks. I trust that if I wasn’t doing it correctly with the current sticks, they wouldn’t allow for the system to boot up and run.

I trusted that the one beep means no RAM, so I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong if I’m following the same steps for my current RAM and the system boots like normal?

@relaxedpre33460 - I would return this RAM as its likely bad or the wrong speed. This systems requires: 1600 MHz PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM SO-DIMMs (PC3-12800 DDR3L)

Both images look to be the same? It is better if both RAMS are from the same manufacturer also. 1600 MHz PC3-12800 DDR3 or 1600 MHz PC3-12800 DDR3L are what is needed.

@livfe I agree that is the issue. The problem is that Ifixit specifically recommended the PC3L - not PC3 - for my system, so I went ahead and bought it. I’m having a difficult time in getting them to respond to me and arrange for an exchange or return - so I’m just going to buy the RAM from New Egg and hope Ifixit responds in the interim. Also mea culpa for the images. I fought to include 2 different images and it would only allow the one (which featured the 8 GB seated)

@relaxedpre33460 - The L is low voltage. Here’s deeper write up: What is the difference between ddr3l and ddr3?
