Display Issue when opened all the way

Hello,

Can you help me on repairing the 2019 MacBook Pro 16 (MacBookPro16,1) screen issue. The MacBook is still functional and works fine with an external display but when the laptop is opened more that 45 degrees the laptop screen image is all funky.

I'm seeing things online about Flexgate and Apple not addressing the issue. Apple wants to charge $700 to fix it? Is this an issue that we can fix ourselves by reading an ifixit guide and using a ifixit tool kit and replacement parts?

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

This series had bad solder joints on the T-CON board ribbon connections. Apple was replacing the displays under an extended warranty program, I would press the Apple service center if that program is still available. If not you might find a tech with the skills to re-solder the ribbon cables.

There is also issues with snap on case covers as well as objects sitting on keyboard area near the display so the glass chin plate gets damaged which in turn punches into the ribbon cable damaging them.

The last issue some people have encountered abrasion of the ribbon cables exposing the lines which could short out. Cleaning the exposed ribbons in the hinge area and maybe a thin coat of non-conductive paint after a careful inspection. This is the only repair besides replacing the assembly which you can review here Display Issue when opened all the way

Hey @danj

Thank you for the very detailed answer. 2 additional Questions:

1. Where can I review the replacing the assembly? There was no link.

2. Can the short flex cable (Item # IF455-024-2) be replaced instead of the whole screen?

@mauricemorales - Click on the Blue URL link I posted which will drop you to the guide.

Sadly, that’s not the cable in question. That cable cars he signal from the main logic board to the T-CON board which is that dangling part from the display it’s these ribbon cables that link the T-CON to the display panel within the lid enclosure. It’s these ribbon cables that could be abraded or cut from a glass shard from the Chin plate which is that area just under the display with the logo on it.
