Can I replace blade SSD with regular SSD?

Hi there,

I have a 2019 iMac 27" with a built-in SSD blade drive (no HDD / Fusion). The SSD failed so I bought the "SSD Upgrade" kit from iFixit which comes with a regular 2.5" 1TB SSD.

Going thru the tutorials and disassembling I now realize I should have bought the "Blade SSD Replacement" kit instead.

However, in the interests of soldiering on, will the following work:

  1. Remove the blade SSD
  2. Buy and connect an Apple SATA cable to the 2.5 SSD
  3. Reassemble
  4. Boot & install macOS

Or should I cut my losses and buy a standalone blade SSD replacement?

Thank you for any insight!

Dave

There’s a bit of a performance difference between the two options. So if price was the more important then I would just get the needed cable and mounting screws and install the 2.5” drive. If performance is the most important then get the blade SSD. But that may not be the best answer as you killed one SSD already so it sounds like you have a bit of data churning which is an issue with SSDs in general. If you can buy at least 50% more of storage, or setup a dual drive install putting in both SSDs! Here the blade is the boot drive and holds you Apps. Your data and media sits on the SATA drive getting the max performance your system can offer.
