Is it actually possible to replace the NC microphones?

Hi, I've looked through Sony's Service Manual, and the part specifically in question is referred to as the "electret cap microphone" - mine unfortunately seems to have died for the left side. Now, the Service Manual claims that the microphone cannot be replaced by itself, but rather, the entire headset must be replaced (Go figure.) Now, my question to people who have already conducted repairs on the XM4 is, can this specific microphone actually be replaced and things would work fine, despite what Sony claims, or will I actually have to get a completely new device just because one component can't be replaced?
