Shuts down unexpectedly when screen recording.

A2115 / 2020 / Processors from 3.1 GHz core i9.

Shuts down unexpectedly when screen recording.

This iMac shuts down and restarts when I am trying to screen record with screenshot. It also shutdown the same way with a third party screen recorder.

It's was running Ventura 13.4.1 and now I have Sonoma 14.1.1 and it still does the same.

It passed built in Apple diagnostics and the file system integrity test.

It has a 1 TB SSD and 718GB free space.

It does have 128GB RAM.

There is no malware ... that Malwarebytes could find at least.

What could be causing it could lockup (mouse stops responding, can hear fan speed up then slow down and a couple of minutes later it shut down and restarts ?

Is there a setting to manage resources or is there a physical problem.

I did change the power supply out from a suggested YouTube. Still same problem.

Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?

Diagnostics sometimes misses things. RAM is a common mis!

I’m assuming you added the RAM your self. Take the one bank out see if that works if not swap the removed RAM for what is still present.

You know I thought it was the ram at first but it was brand new. However I removed two of the stick and it works great.

I even forgot and left it recording and noticed it 8 hour later. 40 gig file but it worked and I could view it. In the past it would lock up after 5 or 10 minutes or in the middle of a recording I was making. So u think that one of the sticks is bad? I'm so happy that i could record that I didn't even think of putting in the other ram sticks to test I just want to start recording my articles. I'll check the other ram out when I have a chance to break from catching up.

@kennethstevens - make sure you mark the SO-DIMMs so you don’t loose track! Stick with the same slots when you test the other SO-DIMMs.


Do make sure the RAMs specs are correct, matching what you have. Als don’t mix the SO-DIMM sticks within the bank grouping as even the same spec’ed RAM can have a bit of slop which won’t show up with the best of testing.
