MacBook doesn’t turn on.

Hey guys,

Replaced the battery 3months ago, it’s been working well, till last night. The battery got low, I plugged my Mac into charge, but it powered down. I left it to charge, but it doesn’t turn on. I checked the charger on another device and it worked fine.

I can’t check if the issue is with the battery-I’m assuming not. I’ve opened it up and checked, nothing seems loose/out of place.

MacBook won’t turn on.😭

Please help.

Regards

Adam

What wattage charger are you using? The 15-inch 2017 MBP needs an 87W (or greater) charger connected in order to power on properly when the battery is fully drained. I'd also recommend trying an SMC reset if you haven't already. If neither of those things help, try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, and if that doesn't help, there's likely some larger hardware issue. Good luck!

Hi Zachary, thank for the response.

Yeah, it’s an 87W Apple charger.

I tried the SMC reset like you recommended-held the power button in for 10s and 20s, with nothing happening.

To try disconnect the battery, wouldn’t I need to prevent the Auto Reboot first? Or can I just go ahead with disconnecting and reconnecting the battery?

Make sure the charger is disconnected. Then hold the power button for about 10 seconds to make sure it's fully powered down. Then close the display. Make sure not to open the display again (even a little). Turn the machine over and remove the bottom plate. Then disconnect the battery data cable then the battery power cable. As long as the system is powered down and the lid remains closed you should be fine to disconnect the battery.

Also, if you know anyone that has a 96W or 140W charger, you could try one of those!

Do you see any signs of life? Like the battery charger icon on the screen or the TouchBar?

Having a USB-C in-line power meter would be helpful right now as the you could see the systems signaling as it’s getting power.

Thanks Dan. It was completely dead. I’d it plugged in for a few hours, tried the power button check, and nothing. Next thing, out of the blue, without me doing anything and to my relief, it turns on.

No idea what to make of it. How would I know if I need to as I fix it for a replacement battery (if it were an issue with the battery)?

@admeister - Apple took away MagSafe! In doing so loosing the charging LED. So instead doing a charging LED within the system they went with a cheaper solution which is just not logical.

This is where you’ll need to be smarter than Apple! Get a in-line power meter I really find it very useful! Here you can tell if the charger and the cable are working correctly (many cables are not correctly wired for charging, stick with the Apple one) and allows you to diagnose system issues as well.

Here’s a good one MakerHawk USB Power Meter, TC66 USB Tester

Thanks Dan, I’ll check it out. Just glad it’s back up and running again.
