Newly replaced Freezer fan not running

Just replacedGE Cafe freezer fan and did not turn on automatically. Does it need time to run for a while (fridge was turned off and defrosted) before it kicks on?

Why did you replace the fan in the first place? What symptoms were you experiencing?

Move the refrigerator away from the wall to access the back. Then, remove the lower rear access panel and place your hand on top of the compressor to check if it's warm and running. Additionally, ensure that the condenser fan, located next to the compressor, is also running.

The fan you replaced, known as the evaporator fan, is an integral part of the entire refrigeration system. Its function is to draw air through the evaporator coils, extracting heat from the circulating air. Normally, the evaporator fan should start running as soon as the refrigerator's compressor turns on.

If you can provide your model number (ideally a photo of the sticker to rule out any typos) I can try to find more repair information for you. Some other things to look into:

  • Control Board - Enter the diagnostic test mode to verify if the evaporator fan starts running. Refer to the technical sheet, usually taped at the back of the fridge or located behind the front grill at the bottom. If the fan operates successfully during the test mode but not in regular operation, it indicates that the control board needs replacement.
  • Wiring Problems - If the evaporator fan fails to run during the diagnostic test mode, it could indicate an issue with the control board, the fan itself (defective from your supplier), or breaks within the wiring connections.
    • For safety purposes, unplug the refrigerator from the power outlet before proceeding with these tips.
    • Inspect the wiring for any physical damage after unscrewing the control box, which will allow you to locate the wire that supplies power to the fan.
      • Even if no visible damage is found, use a multimeter to perform a continuity check. To access the wiring, the control board generally must be removed before dropping the back freezer panel and disconnecting the evaporator fan. Check for continuity in two wires, typically a red and a blue wire.
        • Each wire should register zero ohms on the multimeter for continuity. If continuity is not detected in any of the wires, there is likely a break that needs to be identified.
        • Unplug the wire harness from the ceiling to check for continuity between the control board's plug and the ceiling plug associated with the faulty wire. In this case, if there is no continuity, the multimeter should display infinite resistance, represented as 1. Repair the broken wire or replace the wire harness if necessary.
    • If continuity is not an issue, the problem may lie with the electronic control board or the evaporator fan motor.
