Fridge turns on intermittently

GE Side by side model TPX24BRBA BB. The fridge only turns on intermittently. If I slide the temperature control to “off” and then slide it back to 5 or more it will turn on and cool until it reaches the desired temp. It will then turn off as normal, but from that point it doesn’t always turn back on on its own, to the point that all ice melts. Then sometimes it works on its own and cools down again. It always works when I manually slide temperature control off and then on again. No bad noises from compressor. Any ideas? Thank you.

  3. Unplug your fridge
  4. Clear out the food from the shelves around the temperature control
  5. Remove the temperature control housing. This is typically done by pulling down on the housing
  6. The temperature control is the component that is attached to the dial. You should be able to disconnect all of its wires by unplugging the cable harness
  7. Unplug any other wires connected to this control. If they aren’t already, label them or take a picture for when you reconnect them later.
  8. Remove the face of the dial. These can get stuck with age, so pliers may be necessary
  9. Unscrew the control from the temperature control housing
  10. Slide the control out
  11. Seat the new control in the house
  12. Screw the new control in and reattach the dial face
  13. Reconnect the cable harness and any other wires
  14. Return the temperature control housing to its normal position inside your fridge. These usually just click back into place
  15. Put your food back into your fridge
  16. Plug the fridge back in
