How can I restart my weirdly frozen iPhone?

Hi Everybody,

My iphone 7plus suddenly froze this afternoon but vs truly freezing, it went back and forth in a seeming loop between a black screen and the white screen with the apple logo on it (staying on each screen about 7 seconds). I tried to force restart it a million times (did not work) while plugged in, not plugged and then did a chat with Apple support who told me to plug my iphone into my desktop (an imac). I did, looked at the finder, the iphone was there, tried to update it and it wouldn't, then tried to restore and got a 4013 error code. While it was doing the the restore screen came on. Now it's stuck on the restore screen and when I force restart it, it goes to the apple screen, then back to the restore screen.

I have two questions:

1) can anybody suggest a fix I can do here? I'm not technically inclined.

2) If I bring it into an Apple store which I'm about to do tomorrow morning, will they be back to restore all my apps? I'm not sure when I last did a back-up--it probably was over a year ago, sigh.

Any help/suggestions are appreciated.

The only thing you could try would be connecting it to another PC or Mac with a different cable. The Error 4013 usually means there is a communication problem between the NAND and CPU. Unless you need the data from the device it would be better to upgrade.

Given the error code Apple will not be able to retrieve your data and will inform you that you should upgrade to a newer phone which I would agree given the iPhone 7 is very problematic.

Thanks for the answer! Question: when you say "data" do you mean my apps?

@writergirl5000 The apps you have installed are all recorded in your account by the App Store, so you don't have to worry about getting those back even if you change phones. By data, Chris is referring to any files, photos and possibly messages that are only stored on your phone itself that you might lose if you can't get into the phone to do a backup.

If you have your phone set to automatically back up to the Cloud you should be fine; most if not all of your data will be saved there and get downloaded when you sign into a new phone.

Hi @writergirl5000,

I am in a very similar situation with my granddaughter's iPhone 7. I've done quite a bit of troubleshooting and unfortunately at this point I'm coming to the conclusion that the motherboard got damaged as a result of a skateboard crash.

If you're not technically inclined, then taking it to a repair facility, whether that is Apple or elsewhere, is probably your best bet. I ended up opening mine up and disconnected various parts to see if anything that was attached to the motherboard was causing the problem but only seemed to confirm that the problem is on the board and not on something that could be replaced.

You can read up on what I checked and the help I got on my own question.

SOLVED: Boot loop after being dropped, now stuck in DFU - iPhone 7 - iFixit

However, when my wife had a 7 plus, it ended up having a problem with the front camera that gave similar symptoms. The diagnosis was pretty straight-forward; you have to open up the phone and unplug the selfie camera. If the phone works fine after that, then all you have to do is replace the camera, which is what I did and it fixed the problem. Here's the guide for replacing that part.

iPhone 7 Plus Front Camera and Sensor Cable Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide

To test it all you have to do is follow the instructions up through Step 19. Skip forward to Step 21 and Step 22. Leaving the front camera unplugged, reconnect the battery and fold the screen down, but don't secure it in place. Power the phone back on and see if it behaves any differently. If it works then you can put everything back together but leave that front camera unplugged. You'll be able to use the phone while you wait for a replacement camera assembly to arrive; you can order a replacement right here on iFixit.

iPhone 7 Plus Front Camera and Sensor Cable

I'd recommend the Fix Kit version, as it has all the tools you need to do the job right, plus the adhesive needed to put the screen back on when you're done.

Good luck; let us know what you find!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this. I'm definitely bringing it to the Apple Store.

@writergirl5000 Depending on how much you need what's stored on the phone, there are repair shops that can, for a price of course, fix problems that even Apple won't touch, so even if the Apple store says it can't be fixed, it still could be possible. The biggest trade-off will be how much you need what's on the phone vs. how much you're willing to pay to get it.

If you don't have anything on the phone you need to recover, then it probably wouldn't make sense to have any board-level repairs done since you can buy an iPhone 7+ in perfectly good shape for under $75 USD nowadays, probably cheaper if you shop around and keep an eye out for deals.

Thanks, Jerry! And that's exactly what happened--the guy at the Genius Bar actually was very nice and did a ton of testing free of charge and, ultimately, said: this is dead. Not worth spending the money fixing it. LUCKILY, I did back up my stuff and all of it was salvaged, a huge relief. I bought the 14Pro and really like it and, although I also bought Apple Care (with Lost and Stolen), I am going to buy an old iphone just to have as a back-up in case of emergency (something happens with the 14Pro, just pop it down the Apple Store and pay for service on it temporarily). Thanks again for all the great advice and for taking the time to reply. Greatly appreciate it.
