Bottom screen suddenly turned black

Hi all

I wanted to play some old pokemon games, and got my 3ds XL. I installed custom firmware on my 3ds years ago. I don't really know what exactly i installed anymore.

I was testing what cards still work (i have multiple R4 cards). On inserting one of them, my 3ds just turned off. After turning it on again, my bottom screen stayed black. The touch screen does still work though.

If I wait long enough on the main screen I can even vagely see some icons on the bottom screen. If i scroll though the icons with the D pad, the icons I can see on the bottom screen don't refresh or scroll. If I randomly touch the touch screen, the applications/games launch correctly. (the vagely visible icons stay there even if an application is launched)

Anyone ever had something like this? What is the fix? Should I replace my bottom screen?

I never opened my 3ds (not afraid to if necessary). I'm also sure there is no water damage or anything like that.

I can't see the bottom screen in recovery mode too. (If I wait long enough I can vagely see the bottom screen here too).

EDIT:

Tried reseating battery: did not work.

Tried launching in godmode9: boots just fine, but again without bottom screen.

Any help is appreciated!

If it started using an r4, I'd suggest trying a safe mode update if you can, to rule out a software/firmware issue. If that doesn't work, reseat your display cables and check the connectors for any loose pins or broken solder joints. (Try to very gently nudge them sideways a bit, they should stay in place). If that fails too, it's probably time for a screen replacement

I really appreciate your answer!

It was so strange, I think the 3DS shut down when I was inserting a card. It wasn't even fully in yet.

I ran an update through the recovery mode. I just waited some time at every step, if I wait long enough, the text on the bottom screen is vagely readable so I was able to 'easily' update this way.

Bad news is: it didn't work. I'll open the 3ds tomorrow to check for any loose cables.

Already ordered a new bottom LCD (7 usd), just in case.

Thanks!!

Just a question: is such a problem 'common'? It's so strange the touch screen works, and I can even read text if I wait long enough.

I've never heard of this exact problem, but the touch screen works separately from the LCD, so I'm not too surprised it still works. Your LCD is probably failing, but not completely dead yet, which would explain why you can still read it a bit. Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions!

Hi again!

I tried replacing the screen.

Good news: screen worked again after replacement.

Bad news: 3ds giving me an error at starting. I took a picture:

Anyone can point me out what mistake I made?

@jorendebruyne The top screen is usually the more important one with these errors, can you add a pic of that?

@darthmango I forgot to mention... My top screen didn't work. So I guess my problem is with the top screen now?

I hope I didn't damage a ribbon cable. Do you know what ribbon cable is the top screen? Maybe I just connected wrong.

I'm 100% sure I didn't rip the ribbon cable. Is it 'easy' to damage a ribbon cable with tweezers?
