@lisagramling does it still come on when plugged in? have you checked the cable? the charger? Checked the charging port and used a bit of compressed air, like canned air, to blow it out? What does it do when you plug it in? If this is still the original battery then it is entirely possible that you either have a depleted battery, that can no longer hold a charge, or a bad charging connector (common on the Kindle)
