SSD caddy will not communicate (sort of)

I removed my dead optical drive and purchased a SSD caddy and a 480gb Kingston SSD. The caddy fits perfectly- no issues with mounting at all. When I boot, the new drive is recognized but I cannot format, just get “Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing”.

Seemed odd to me that this would communicate with the hardware and “see” the drive and all its info but not format. But no matter, I started troubleshooting.

I put the drive in a USB enclosure - it behaved normally and I was able to format. So that eliminates the drive.

Everything I read said the tiny SATA cable that connected the optical drive to the mobo is fragile and might be bad. Again, seemed odd that this would be the case and be “half way broken” but no matter, I ordered a new one. Same exact results, no change, can see the drive in Finder but cannot format.

So that leaves the caddy itself. So I purchased a SATA to USB cable from iFixit and that showed up today. And guess what: when I connect the caddy via USB, it works and I was able to copy files etc.

This tells me that either the SATA cable is bad (seems odd both would fail in the same way). I ordered a new/different caddy (data doubler) even though it seems a slim chance.

Anyone have any ideas?

Gekozen oplossing

well that did it - I found an old SATA II drive and indeed (as I already knew, but denied it could be the culprit), my late 2011, 13" MBP is finally satisfied. thanks for the help, and hopefully this post is a help to someone else!

Inspect your carrier is it marked as SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) compliant? Some are only able to support SATA I (1.5Gb/s) and SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drives. Also what is your OS-X/macOS release?

Running High Sierra.

Caddy is SATA III - so is the new SSD, I read that the Mac might not like SATA III on the optical bay, I am watching an old SATA II on eBay.

However seems odd that it would refuse to format even, even once I got it formatted via the enclosure, it still wouldn’t let me copy files, it would ask for authorization (I did not format with encryption or anything) so it doesn’t jive.

Also I did look at the “device manager” (forgive me, I am a Windows guy) on the Mac and it did say SATA III for the optical bay.

@Eric Williams - Thats what I was afraid of ;-{ The optical drive bay is only able to support SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) Here's a bit more on the issue OWC Data Doubler Check the Compatibility section for a deeper run down.

I already read that - as I stated i have a data doubler showing up tomorrow. i disregarded that note for a few reasons (not saying i was right to do so, but it was a judgement call):

1) properties for the optical bay show SATA III when I check

2) OWC mentioned it wont 'run reliably'. maybe a bad choice of words? this isnt a reliability issue - it just wont format

3) i must have read 100 issues people have had with putting an SSD in the optical bay and i had not read a single one describing the symptoms i have

all of that being said - maybe i just needed a push in the right direction, i just ordered a 300gb Intel SATA II drive off ebay for $25. i will follow up when it arrives if it solves the problem.

thanks for the help!
