Computer has no admin account

So I got an SSD with El Capitan and lots of apps pre-loaded. Somehow, the only account on the computer is not the admin, so there is no admin account. How does this happen, and is there a way to forcefully create an admin?

I have seen this happen a few times before and the way I have always managed to resolve it is by running a command in single user mode to modify the drive so that it thinks account creation was never done. So you can create a new admin account. Grant admin to the account you want and then ditch the account you just made.

There is a fairly comprehensive step by step on this here:

It can happen when one creates a new account to delete the existing one and forgets to make it an administrative account. Then logs in the new user, deletes the administrative user by supplying the admin password, et voilà, makes the Mac almost unusable.

All you can do is save the Apps you're interested to on a pendrive and reinstall from scratch. Licences of the paid Apps have gone one way or the other with the old user that was cancelled. You can use either the original disks, create a Usb pendrive, or reinstall via the internet if you have a fast enough connection.

Hi @guardian10

That is strange isn’t it,iv never seen that before

I don’t mean to be putting you from Website to website but for this one I would actually get on a live chat with apple support and see what they think

The reason why I think you should do this is because it might be a bug that can be patched with a small update so other people don’t encounter this issue

Thanks:-)

It's a 2011, so wouldn't Apple deny it for it's age?

@guardian10

I don’t think they would as not so long ago i phoned up and started asking about a 2006 iMac and they helped

So I would imagine that they would do a 2011:-)

Try going under System Preferences - Users and unlocking it and adding an account and see if you can set it up as an Administrator account.

The problem is that I can't unlock it because the admin account doesn't exist.

@guardian10 I'd try using Migration assistant using another Mac in Target Mode.
