Replacing the drive is a real pain. These machines are not easy to work on even for a pro. Try putting the machine on its side so that the drive opening is facing down and hanging over the edge of a table. Get a pair of tweezers, get a flashlight . Sit on the floor. The SD Card should have fallen toward the drive opening when you turned it. Use the flashlight to spot the card and try to grasp the card with the tweezers. If all fails, get an external firewire or USB, DVD drive.

I've just done the same thing. Fortunately my assistant Lulu was on hand with her vacuum and we placed the mac on its side with the DVD slot facing down. She applied the vacuum and presto the card popped out. What a relief........

Great tip. I'd tried the gravity thing and tweezers and card without success - just managed to push it further in. Dyson vac + crevice tool = sd card whizzing up the hose. Brilliant!

I screwed up and pushed my SD card in the DVD drive of m 27" iMac too. Fortunately, however, I was very lucky in removing it.

The first thing I did was immediately shut down the iMac and unplug the power cord. I then carefully stood the computer on edge on a table with the DVD drive downward. I tilted it some in case the SD card might fall into the slot and toward the center of the drive. When I shined my flashlight on the slot, I could see the corner of the SD card! I then got a piece of thick paper... a 3x5 note card... and cut it into an "L" shape so I could hook the back of the card and pull it out.

I suppose I could have pushed the SD card back in to see if I could get consistent results with this process, but..... nah, I'm satisfied not knowing.

I'm now considering leaving a disk in the drive to maybe keep me from doing it again.

Good luck to anyone who has this experience.

Looks like the only way will be to remove the optical drive, after all, SD cards are very small, use this guide to help you with this.

1/ Don't panic

2/ Unplug iMAc and tip on side.

3/ Find flashlight & tweezers

4/ Use note card as per Gary but recommend folding card before cutting such that fold remains on short arm of "L" shape to make a pocket to aid recovery of SD card

5/ Fishing the SD card out and grabbing edge with tweezers to remove it is but a moments work...

6/ Profit

Merci merci

I myself put the SD card in the wrong slot !!

I was going to try the Vacuum trick but my wife decided to try with a 15 cm X 1mm thick plastic ruler in the slot and it worked within less than a minute. But I had my computer turned on the side to bring it as close as possible to the exit of the slot before, and it worked !! Relief...

Thanks for all the wonderful advice. I'd lost my SD card in there comletely and I couldn't try the vacuum trick so I made a hook out of card, turned the Mac on it's side and fished it out.

Worked perfectly.

I used single ply corrugated cardboard as that's a bit thicker, but not too thick to get in the slot.

I thought it sounded too easy to be true, but just like magic, it worked! I used a thin steel 6" ruler and tweezers.

I'm so relieved, many thanks "Mayer". You'd think that after almost 4 years Apple might have thought of a way to prevent making this mistake, so many people having fallen into the same trap!

Had this at school. Take a piece of paper and fold it in 3rds. Slip into DVD slot and when card slides between the folds, clamp it like tweezers and slowly pull out of DVD slot. Whew!
