Installed 4gb x 2 in my MBP early 2011 and it says 6gb

Ive installed 2 sticks for 4gb ddr3 pc3-10600 so dimm ram into my early 2011 13” macbook pro and when i boot it up, it says it has 6gb of ram. At first i thought maybe the OS was taking up roughly 2gb and it was giving me what was left but im fairly certain that isn’t the case. Everything else is stock on this machine besides the upgraded ram

since it has only 2 stick with each being 4gb than the APU is allocating via the bios 2gb for the video processing. go into the bios and look at the installed ram amount. it should report the correct amount there.

Mac's are different than a Windows PC - No access to the BIOS (here its called EFI {Extensible Firmware Interface})

@danj I wasn't asking him/her to alter it. just to check it.

What does About this Mac tell you within the memory tab do you see both SO-DIMM's listed as well as the total RAM in the top left corner.

If that is correctly showing up you have what you installed physically.

Then what is the allocation of this RAM becomes the question! Now open up the Activity Monitor app and click on the Memory section to see what's being used.
