Before re-installing anything,

you should start in safe mode and try to troubleshoot the problem.

On Dell computers, you simply have to press F8 when the computer is starting.

A menu will offer you to start in safe mode.

Are you up to date in terms of Windows XP security updates?

If no, you should start there.

Find out what OS you are using and re-image it. If this doesn't work it could be a hardware fault, most likely logic board. (or mother board as you PC users say)

You can try running a your anti-virus program and your malware program. Before running them boot into the safe mode. Have you recently installed new software? If so consider uninstalling it. Another possibility would be to use a restore point from before the problem started. If all of these fail backup what you can and reformat the drive and reinstall XP. Good luck Ralph
