Refrigerators produced by Samsung. Model RF220NCTASR/AA 02 POWER SHUT OFF REFER NO LONGER COOLING

Condenser fan won't work?

I replaced the condenser fan in my refrigerator, it worked for a second or two then stopped and now won't work, What could be the problem?

Hi,

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

The "compressor" fan is actually used to cool the condenser not the compressor per se and is correctly known as the condenser fan.

They are usually thermostatically controlled (or there is a temp sensor located on the condenser which signals the control board to turn the fan on or off) and are only turned on when the temperature in the condenser coils gets too warm/hot.

If it is running all the time then there is another problem as usually they don't.

Check that the condenser coils are clean and free of dust etc, so as to ensure that the heat can escape more easily to the air.

Sorry yes, the Condenser fan, the Condenser gets so hot and the fan is just not coming on at all, the old fan melted from the heat, presumably that had stopped working too. Model number is RSH5UBMH. Thanks

If your comfortable with a multi meter. Check to see if you have power going to the fan when condenser is hot. If not then most likely it is a problem with the temperature switch. Or there is a wire shoring some where. I would do a good visual inspection before the multi meter test. Look for broke or frayed wires.

Hi @Tom Mc Donnell.

Firstly apologies. It seems that for your model, Samsung spares call it a compressor fan and that it is designed to run when the compressor is operating and it is controlled by a temp switch.

The condenser coils can get hot but if the fan (even though not working now) was running continually and the compressor is also running continually then I think that there is a problem. At some point the compartments should reach their set temps and the compressor should be stopped. During the day this may be difficult to achieve if the doors are being opened a lot thereby letting out the cold air which has to be replaced.

Is the compressor running first thing in the a.m. when there hasn’t been much user activity with it overnight i.e. doors opened a lot? It can be running then also but have you noticed it stopped at all even for a short while? If stopped for approx. 20-25 minutes this most probably is when it is auto defrosting and this should only occur once every 8-10 hours.

I couldn’t find a service manual for your model but found this service manual for another model that has the same first model letters and number i.e. RSH5, which hopefully may help. You will need a computer program such as Open Office, Libre Office or MS Word to open the manual as it is a .ppt (powerpoint presentation) file

Here’s a composite of two images from the manual (see slides 102 & 103) that show that the C-Fan (compressor fan) requires between 8-12V DC to operate and that if there are no pulses (presumably rotation pulses from a sensor in the fan) received by the control board from the fan, to indicate that it is operating, then the control attempts to turn it on 4 times and if still no good then it stops trying and attempts again after 10 minutes.

Hopefully a start. Fridges are getting too complicated ;-(
