Why will my printer no longer print or photocopy?

The printer will only print blank pages. The ‘Print Quality Diagnostic‘ report says that there is no black ink, yet it prints the report in black ink! In reality there is plenty of black ink: the cartridge has just been changed. Another error report says that ‘alignment has failed: cartridge is set to default quality’. Help would be greatly appreciated!
