Why is my new iMac video card not working

Hi all,

I have an early 2008 24” iMac, top of the line with a 3.06GHz Core 2 DuoCPU and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS GPU.

The issue is that when I turn it on I get nothing on the display at all. It also takes the Mac a few attempts to power on (what I mean by this is that when you press the power button you can hear The Superdrive starting up, the fans start for a second and then the Mac powers off for a second, and then powers itself back on. It does this twice or thrice until it successfully powers on with nothing on the LCD and the fans at 100%)

The problem I’m having is that after buying a Radeon 2600 Pro to replace my old dead GPU board, nothing happens. No fans nor is the SuperDrive spinning. I went to check the diagnostic LED’s: 1 is always on, 2 and 3 are blinking every few seconds and LED 4 is off.

When I remove the GPU board altogether or add my old 8800 GS back in to the system, the fans go completely full blast. At this point All Diagnostic LEDs are lit except for LED 4. Does anyone know what’s going on here?

Thanks In Advance, Kyle

Edit: just noticed that the when the LED flashes momentarily you can also see the fans move a very slight bit, so i believe it’s trying to power on but there’s something stopping it

Sadly, the replacement GPU board won’t work in your system. The best you can use is a ATI (AMD) Radeon HD 4850. The version of MXM your system has won’t support the Radeon HD 2600 Pro

The GPU Specs your system can support:

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M PCI-E 2.0 x 16

ATI Radeon HD 4850 PCI-E 2.0 x 16

The GPU you are trying to use:

Radeon HD 2600 Pro PCI-E 1.0 x 16

Thanks so much for responding, but i think you may have mistaken this Mac with the 2009 iMac, as this is an Early 2008 iMac the GPU should be compatible (hypothetically of course)

@Kyle Byrne - Apple upgraded the system, I was never able to get the older MXM board to work.

@danj Oh dear, so would i even be able to buy an 8800gs to use in this system or only the GPUs you listed in your first comment

See if this works NVIDIA GeForce GT130

@danj well I’ve put myself in a pickle now, because i have an Nvidia 8800GS on it’s way because i was worried that something would go wrong with the AMD 2600, so I’m assuming that I’ll have to sell these again as untested if I’m unable to return them

Fairly annoying because i bought this machine with bad Graphics for like €40 as a project machine. But then i had to buy a new Power Supply because the old one went bad. And now I’m after messing up with the GPUs, putting more money down the tank
