MacBook turns off randomly and then power button does nothing

Hi Everyone,

I have a Macbook Pro Early 2011 15 inch!

I have used this laptop regularly from Dec 2011 to almost till mid-2018. I faced very little to no issues apart from the laptop being terribly slow! So I started using a new one and this one kinda got on the sidelines. After a while, I noticed that the battery had swollen up and was on the verge of breaking the trackpad so I had it removed out.

Even at this point, the laptop would work pretty well if I were to use it while it was plugged in. Fast forward to now, after using it irregularly every now and then, one of these days I turned it and it was working fine at first. I started taking a backup of the device and after some 7-8 mins it suddenly turned off! I tried to turn it on again, but the power button was completely useless. I held onto it for a few seconds, but still no response.

So I naturally disconnected the charger and plugged it back in, the laptop makes a whirring sound of the fans and then makes a clicking sound and turns off again. I sat it out that day and when I tried turning it on the next day, it would boot at first, but after 5-7 mins it would turn off and the same issue would repeat.

After reading numerous posts, I have tried all the following solutions:

  1. Bought a new battery, tried to turn it on, the same issue!
  2. Did the SMC and the PRAM reset multiple times!
  3. Considering it might be a hard disk issue, I got a new SSD drive, and while I was trying to install the OS into this new drive, the same issue prevailed. It started the process once for 5-7 mins and then would not turn on.
  4. Took out both the RAM’s, cleaned them, inserted them one at a time, the issue prevails.

Once it has turned off randomly after 5-7 mins, the only way I can get anything to happen is by pressing Shift + Control + Alt/ Option key and releasing them at the same time. The laptop does make the chime and comes to the Apple Logo loading and turns itself off almost when it reaches some 10%.

Has anyone faced such an issue before? Is it any possible solution that I might be able to work out?

I am fairly confident that this is due to a logic board failure, specifically the GPU. This model is know to have a GPU which fails after so many years of use. One of the common symptoms you’ll see when the GPU fails is rebooting on startup, or an inability to complete the boot up sequence. Unfortunately the GPU is integrated into the logic board, and I would not recommend replacing the logic board on this model because any used board you install will likely run into the same issue down the line. It is possible to install a logic board from a similar 2012 15” MBP which wouldn’t suffer from this issue, but the cost of doing that is usually not worth it.
