Can I use an Early 2013 rMBP display with a Late 2013 rMBP?

Hi,

I recently purchased a used 15” rMBP and apparently Did I accidentally remove a backlight power connector?.

This rMBP seems to already be using a display from a different model of rMBP as the webcam doesn’t work because the webcam connector is small but the socket on the logic board is large. I guess this is a display from an early 2013 rMBP.

So my question, to double check, is will a display from an early 2013 work with a late 2013 MacBook Pro? I understand the webcam (and therefore auto-brightness) will not work, but I don’t use these features anyway. The reason I’m considering this is that a new early 2013 display is a whopping £285 cheaper than a new late 2013 display!

Apple loves to mess us up!

The MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2012-Early 2013) Display Assembly is not workable in a Late 2013 system! You need this display MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Display Assembly

Apple altered a few things the iSight cable is different and the displays ID is different. The display won’t show the loading bar or offer you the startup manager as the systems firmware won’t have the needed driver to enable the display. So only after the OS is loaded will the driver get loaded.

Its not worth it!

Thanks. Is there any way I can check what display it currently has as I'm curious since it has the wrong iSight connector

I'm not following you here?

The current display of the MacBook doesn't have the correct iSight connector, I assume it was replaced by the previous owner. The display has a small iSight connector but the logic board has a larger slot.

The display is a LSN154YL01-004, manufactured on 2012-06-20. I'm guessing this is indeed an early 2013 display? Apart from the webcam it does work perfectly, including boot menus.

Sounds like someone Frankenstein'ed the lid! You have a mish-mash of parts.

The panel is the correct one for your system but the shell is for the older model.
