Cracked screen, remove to see if LCD is broken?
Before I order the digitizer is there a way to know if I need to also replace the LCD? Should I remove the broken digitizer before ordering parts?

Well if only the front panel digitzer is broken you should get apple logo or any image when you turn it on or charge it.
If you get no image on the LCD what so ever i would try to charge it while using a USB voltage meter. You can find it here: USB Mini Voltmeter . You should get more the 1A while charging and that means its charging fine. If its charging fine but you dont get anything on the screen i would assume the LCD is broken as well.
