iMac 2008 screen issue (not backlight)

I purchased a 2008 iMac and have a problem with the screen. The screen stays black but chime and fans start when pressing the on button. There is a light coming from the back of the screen which is how I know the backlight is working but there is nothing appearing on the screen.

can someone help me on ways to diagnose this problem? I am a newbie.

If you are seeing a white light glow around the screen then your backlight is working all you are seeing is the lights leakage! To prove that take a strong flashlight place it on the screen at a sharp angle the light aiming in would allow you to see a faint image of your desk top and its icons.

- If you see the desktop and its icons that would imply the backlight has failed.

The other test you can do is plug in an external display via the Mini-DVI connection on the back using the needed adapter to convert it to what ever your external display offers.

- If you don’t see an image that would imply your logic board has failed.
