Not all systems are able to be upgraded to the latest version of macOS.

How about telling us your exact model so we can guide you. Locate your systems S/N and plug it into here EveryMac - Lookup let us know what you have!

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the reply! really appreciate it. Hopefully this is all the info you’re after? I don’t necessarily need to be on the latest OS…just a more updated version than the current one.

with 10.6.8 I’m no longer able to use zoom and youtube will stop being supported at some point.

Okay, so your MacBook Pro is 2008 A1260. Your model can upgrade to El Capitan macOS 10.11.x.

You can follow the link below for the information and download the installer.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Andy. It was all going well until we realised that we don't know the administrator password. This is a hand me down macbook that was given to the kids and no one can remember the password. Is it possible to install El Capitan without entering the password? Thanks, Jaz

Yes, if you download and create a usb installer for El Capitan you will be able to wipe the existing hard drive and create a new administrator password.

Put the USB installer in the computer and hold the option key when the Apple logo appears, this will start the start up manager, select the usb drive and you will be good to go.

If you want to wipe the drive you can do it from the utilities menu in the start up manager.

If you have any issues, give me a shout.

Andy
