Wifi ribbon cable broken. Connector stuck in motherboard!

Hello all,

My wifi has been not working for a while now so I finally decided to open up my mbp to see what was going on.

when I opened to back of the machine I noticed that the wifi ribbon cable was not connected to the motherboard. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the actual connector that was supposed to be attached to the ribbon had come off and was still connected on the motherboard. The connector fits inside of the female part of the connector which makes it very hard to remove. Is there a technique I can use that will not harm the part of the connector that is still part of the motherboard?

I have attached a couple of pictures (sorry for the poor quality). One photo is of the ribbon connector with the missing connector piece and the other photo is of the connector piece stuck in the motherboard. I’ve tried to pry it out with tweezers but as it is fully surrounded by the other part of the connector I can’t remove it.

i’ve been thinking about putting a small amount of glue on the back and trying to pull it out that way. Thoughts?

any help would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I would use a strip of sticky duck tape pressed on the flat surface of the inner connector and folded in the middle on the long bias so the pull pressure is more distributed. Then slowly pull up.

Just had this happen to me with a Macbook 2011…

I tried many many things and even the tape suggestion which was completely futile.

Finally got it out using a razor blade.

You will see there are tiny metal pieces running lengthwise on each side of the connector piece of the motherboard. These tiny pieces are left over from the cable and are not part of the motherboard. You can wedge the razor blade under each side and use the tiny metal pieces as leverage to pop it out.

These tiny metal pieces are so fragile that they break off with tweezers, but if you get the blade underneath all of them, they will hold and create enough force to pop it out. I would recommend doing a little on each side instead of trying to pop it out from one side only.

As a computer novice, I was worried that I would break something, but after installing a new cable, everything is working again.

Try not to use the glue… it could be a mess. Try some tweezers like this one. Do it very slowly and remember to disconnect the battery first. Wish you luck!!
