Water fills and drains but does not spray (error code 10-1)

My Whirlpool dishwasher fills the water but does not go in the spray cycle. When I cancel it the water drains properly. I ran a diagnostic and it gave me error code 10-1 , which is about a faulty “detergent dispenser”. When I run a cycle the detergent dispenser does open up. Should I go ahead and still replace the detergent dispenser unit. Logically it doesn’t make sense that the detergent dispenser system would cause the dishwasher to not go in a spray cycle. I want to make sure it’s not a motor issue before buying the detergent dispenser part.

Circulation Pump

The circulation pump uses a motor and impeller to force water up through the wash arms. If the circulation pump is defective, the dishes won’t be cleaned properly. If the motor isn’t making any noise or is just making a humming sound after the dishwasher has filled, the motor may be burned out. First, ensure that power is getting to the motor. Second, to ensure that the impeller can turn, check the pump housing for debris. If power is getting to the motor and the pump is clear of debris, the motor might need to be replaced. Be aware that the circulation pump may be challenging to replace, although many do-it-yourselfers have been successful with the replacement.

This answer fails to address the question concerning the diagnostic code of 10-1. I don’t disagree that swapping the pump seems reasonable, but how does this correct the diagnostic response? The ridiculous detergent door is a $100 part, and I have no reason—beyond the diagnostic—to believe it is the problem. Sometimes it washes/sprays, sometimes not...last part swap was a diverter motor—again based on diagnostic codes. Time to discard the dishwasher as has become the standard nonsensical behavior around all dishwashers regardless of price. If I could buy a 1980 version, I would buy it and refurbish...bet it would last a lot longer than these. We don’t need complex electronics, diagnostics, nor water recycling. We use gray water. Rambling.

Real question—10-1 code says detergent dispenser. Why do you say replace pump? Is this typically root cause for that code, or is the code BS? Thank you for your patience. LV

I had the same problem, went through all the online discovery Youtubes and blogs, replaced controller, water inlet valve, plunged the kitchen sink, cleaned all filters, and still there was no wash. My error code was "heating element is not working" even when my husband got a burn from touching it. No error showed for bad circulation pump, which is what it was.

Here is my solution: IF your dishwasher is 4 or more years old where it fills and drains and seems to go through the timing, but the washer arm(s) are in the same position as when you started, AND you have cleaned the filter and washer arm(s), then it is likely the circulation pump. I got one from Amazon for $99 (plus $15 for extended warranty), followed a wonderful YouTube that was on that Amazon pump sales page, and the dishwasher cleans like new!

I took advantage and also cleaned behind all the manifold tubing that carry water to the arms (they were YUCK behind them), and am a very happy now.
