Xbox shuts off after about 20 minutes of gaming

Like the title says, my xbox seems to turn off only when I play games. I had it idling on the home menu for about two hours, but 10 minutes into Forza 5, it shut off by itself. If I attempt turning it back on afterwards it turns itself off again. The only way for it to turn back on is to unplug everything and leave it overnight.

I've opened literally every part of the xbox including the PSU and blew out all the dust I could find. I've tried power cycling and factory resetting and nothing seems to work. The heatsinks never seems to get excessively hot when playing games so I'm not sure if the issue is caused by overheating or not.

Sounds like a popped condincer to me they still use them in a lot of small electronics

@gansolo I have instant on mode turned on, but after it shuts itself off it still takes around a minute to start up so it doesn't really make a difference

you said heat sink doesn’t get super hot.

this is bad. the heat sink is supposed to be very hot because that means it’s doing its job, that it is transferring heat away from the main processor.

you said you cleaned out dust, did you re thermal the processor? especially if you removed the heat sink, it will need new thermal paste.

if it still shuts down randomly at that point it is most likely either HDD or Mobo issue

Ok that makes sense, I did find it strange that the heat sink didnt get hot. I'll try to see if re thermaling with help

Thermal paste didn't work. However, the heatsink was MUCH hotter than it was before. I played clustertruck for about 20 minutes before the console shut off again.

i've actually been having this issue since 2015 and i've long since given up. however a few months ago i tried replacing the mobo and reapplying the thermal paste on the cpu heatsink and it seemed to help a little. however it started turning off after about an hour of use. so unfortunately i was never able to find a solution and the xbox now serves as a paperweight

however you may be able to try your luck with cleaning the fans and re applying thermal paste if you're confident enough to take apart your console. Microsoft stopped supporting the original xb1 long ago so won't have to worry about warranty
